PhD & Doctorate Gowns

What is a PhD gown?

A PhD gown is worn by PhD award recipients. In Australia, the most common PhD gowns are referred to as either the Oxford style PhD gown, or the Cambridge style PhD gown, however many universities prescribe other designs for PhD award graduates. PhD gowns are also worn with a PhD hood and PhD bonnet or mortar board.

What is the difference between an Oxford and Cambridge style PhD gown?

An Oxford style PhD gown features wrist-length bell shape sleeves and traditional pencil pleating gathered across the back and shoulders of the robe. The cuff of the sleeves will feature coloured satin lining, and the front facing of the Oxford style PhD gown will have cloured satin lining.

A Cambridge style PhD gown features full length sleeves, much like a masters gown, with an opening in the sleeve through which you put your arms. This style also has traditional pencil pleating gathered across the back and shoulders of the robe. A Cambridge style PhD gown will feature coloured satin facings.

Other variations in style for PhD gowns

Like any other type of academic dress, there are many variations in style to PhD gowns, not to mention PhD hoods and PhD headwear, be it a PhD bonnet or mortar board. Some PhD robes feature a full sleeve lining in coloured satin, which may be gathered at the cuff with hand-made braided detail. Others may feature totally unique sleeve patterns or beautifully edged trims.

We make PhD gowns for International universities

We tailor PhD gowns for Australian academics who achieved their PhD from overseas universities. These are most commonly PhD gowns for UK universities, Irish PhD Gowns, Scottish PhD Gowns, South African PhD gowns and numerous European PhD graduations gowns to name a few. As our team include qualified specialized garment construction and pattern design tailors and machinists, we can make academic dress for all PhD and international graduation gowns.

American Doctorate Style PhD Gowns

American Doctorate PhD robes are unique to most of the aforementioned PhD gowns with UK origins. American Doctorate gowns often feature zippered front facings, so the robe is worn closed, and usually feature chevron details on the arms. The sleeves are typically gathered at the wrist, and the designs of the American Doctorate gowns often include both satin and velvet fabrics. We also make American Doctorate hoods and bonnets or headwear unique to American academic dress.

Can I choose what fabric my PhD gown is made from?

You can choose from our select range of fabrics including polyester, wool polyester blend or superfine pure wool for your graduation gown. Refer to our fabric type description which is located below each academic gown product detail page. Note that some colours may not be available in wool blends or pure wool.

How do I choose the size of my PhD gown?

The length of your PhD gown should be around mid-calf length (a bit lower is better). Sizing is determined by your height, though if you have broad shoulders or need a wider robe, refer to our size guide information located below each graduation gown product page.
