Gown Sizing

Sizing of academic robes is generally determined by a person’s height. This is a universal method of sizing for Oxford and Cambridge style academic gowns as worn within Australia. This is the same style of gown and sizing method typically used by universities and institutions that we supply.

Gown Sizes Size Height cms/ft
XS Extra Small Size 38 147/4'8
S Small Size 40 152 / 5'
Size 42 157/ 5'2
Size 44 162 / 5'4
M Medium Size 46 168 / 5'6
Size 48 173 / 5'8
Size 50 178 / 5'10
L Large Size 52 183 / 6'
Size 54 187 / 6'2
Size 56 193 / 6'4
XL Extra Large Size 58 198 / 6'6

As above, there are increments to each gown size ie. Small = Sizes 40 – 44. This means that a size 40, 42 and 44 all have the same yoke size (shoulder width) while the length of the gown differs.

  • If you have broad shoulders or require more width to your robe, then consider a larger size.
  • Gowns are intended to be loose-fitting. In Australia, gowns are typically worn open at the front over existing clothing and are approximately mid-calf length. The length and drape of a robe do make a difference to the overall look of your robe, and we recommend that a longer gown will look more elegant and fitting.
  • The design of academic dress originated long ago, so pattern details such as sleeve length do not necessarily translate to contemporary fashion sizing.
  • It is not recommended to wear a bulky coat underneath an academic gown.
  • We do offer a special fitting service though this is only in the case of gowns made for purchase.

Our soft cap mortar boards have been designed by us to provide better fit, easier sizing and a quality look more similar to that of a traditional hard crown mortar board.

Our soft cap mortars fit better overall and the elastic means there is some allowance between sizes, and gives it some grip.

Of course, keep in mind that all head shapes are different and therefore this will affect sizing and fit too! If you’re unsure, don’t forget you can exchange your headwear according to the returns and exchanges terms on our website.

Garment Care

Please follow our care and laundering instructions as provided with your purchase. Care advice for polyester, wool-poly and wool will differ.

  • Academic dress is intended for wear in ceremony only
  • Avoid eating or drinking when wearing
  • Satin hoods and facings may stain
  • Take care when handling (pining or fingernails may damage satin fabric)

For any satin linings or facings:

  • Dry clean P(30) POLY
  • Dry clean A 50+ SHAMUSE
  • Do not soak
  • Do not bleach
  • Do not wring
  • Drip dry in shade
  • Do not tumble dry
  • Warm iron if desired (do not put hot iron directly onto satin!)

For best wear and drape of academic dress, we recommend to wear your garment after laundering or hanging. Wearing directly after being folded means some creases may appear. If you can’t gently iron or steam your garment, hang on a coat hanger to help the creases fall out.

Every George H. Lilley Regalia gown comes with a complimentary robe bag. We recommend using this bag for storage and travel. Allowing your gown to air regularly will assist to keep your garment in best condition.

If at any time you are not sure about the best care of your garment, please contact us, the manufacturer, for advice.
